Productive Evening Shift

After finishing work, I headed down to the allotment. It’s something I keep meaning to do after work – a couple of hours here and there during the week would lessen how much weeding needs to be done over the weekend! Somehow though, despite my best intentions, it doesn’t happen.

But today it did! I grabbed my gloves and weed bucket and looked at the plot. Honestly! Where to begin? In the end, I chose to weed around the strawberry bed. The weeds are relentless and weeding this area can be tricky. As I weeded, Steve appeared and we had a chat. It turns out he’d had a busy day driving all the way to Wales then having to come home due to his fishing trip being called off.

After the strawberry bed, I moved onto Geoff’s raised beds. Despite my best efforts, the weeds have begun to take over yet again. The most difficult part is to weed along the sides of the path between the beds. There isn’t much room to get your fingers or hands into any position where you could get a good hold of the weeds. As much as it’s tricky, it definitely is one of those jobs that has makes a massive improvement to how the plot looks. For good measure, I also managed to fully weed one of the beds and roughly weed another.

Flushed with success, I headed across to see Geoff who was supervising the chickens in his coop. Tonight was the first night that the rescue hens have mixed with his Black Rocks. Surprisingly, all was calm and there didn’t seem to be any fighting. There’s always some anxiety when introducing new chickens to one another. It was lovely to catch up with Geoff as it’s been ages.

My next job was to weed around the edge of the main coop. As I was on a roll with tricky weeding, I thought I might as well continue to tackle the bits I try to avoid. The main difficulty with weeding the back of the Main Coop is that the grass will insist on growing through the netting. Or more accurately, getting tangled in it. It was a slow job but it definitely looks much better!

Pausing only to empty the weed bucket, I moved on to weeding the central path. By the time I got halfway, I had run out of steam and realised I was rather hungry. I emptied the weed bucket and headed off home in search of food.
