Over the past couple of days Gertie has been busy exploring the garden with the rest of the Topknot Gang. Unfortunately, she hasn’t been accepted by Coco or Trixie but the silkies don’t seem to mind her walking near them. Initially, I opened up her coop expecting her to just enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. The last thing I expected was to regularly play hide and seek with a blind chicken who seems to have developed chameleon level skills at disappearing in the garden. I keep finding her in random places. Just yesterday I found her by the back gate, under a bush, under the cat kennel and hiding behind the purple Omlet. That last one saw me hunt all around the garden for ten minutes until I found her!

But Gertie saved her biggest surprise until today. With the Topknot Gang spending long periods of time out in the garden I have begun to find eggs laid in odd places. Under one of the bushes seems to be a favourite spot for Gertie to relax. I discovered her there a couple of days ago standing next to an egg. Muttering to myself about idiotic birds that ignored the two comfortable best boxes, I collected the egg and headed back inside, thinking no more about it. When I got home after work today, I opened up the Omlets and let the girls out. Moving back to the patio, I opened up Gertie’s to find her proudly standing next to an egg!

Her comb has improved in colour the last couple of weeks and she is eating and drinking well. But an egg is a great sign that she is happy and as healthy as she can be despite her blindness and wobbliness.
