Will’s Saloon

I had meant to write about this exciting development a couple of days ago but finding time to write has been tricky over the last few days. Our site Clubhouse, closed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, has left us at the mercy of the ever fickle British weather. It’s all very well in summer, sitting outdoors on benches by Cliff’s shed. But for those of us who need to be down every day in the winter, it’s not a happy thought. During the winter, the allotment is freezing, the rain specialises in drowning you on the way to and from the allotment, leaving you to cower in the chicken coop waiting for it to stop (it never does!). Soaked through despite wearing a coat, it’s vital to have somewhere dry and warm to keep hyperthermia at bay. This problem has persisted for the last three years but the gang got their heads together and have come up with a brilliant plan!

Will has two greenhouses on his plot, a smaller one and one the size of a small house. It’s huge! Greenhouses are great because with the doors closed, they can keep everything inside at around ten degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even in winter. Wills idea was to take the smaller greenhouse and turn it into a mini clubhouse over the winter. As usual, Cliff and the others helped out, kitting out the grandly named ‘Will’s Saloon’ with chairs, a bench, a rug, comfy cushions and a sign. It looks amazing and I’m looking forward to seeing it in action over the winter! All that’s needed is some solar fairy lights which I think I have floating around somewhere!

Although the winter is quite a lonely time as most plot holders are hibernating at home, those who brave the elements will have a dry, warm and comfortable place to sit and enjoy being on site.
