It’s always worth pausing at the end of the year to think about what has happened and to plan for the next year. Looking back on the allotment year, it’s been eventful with the arrival of new chickens and quail as well as a new roof on the Main Coop. We have welcomed Qwerty, Quinta and Zilla to keep Queenie company after losing Quentin and Quinn. We also welcomed three new bantams, Connie, Bonny and Ginny and we are temporarily looking after Geoff’s black rock hen who is slowly integrating with the big girls (Rey, Polly and Flora). Maude and Mavis are doing well and enjoying a slower pace of life in their retirement coop.

There are big plans for the greenhouse and patio next year as well as an upgrade to the fruit section by the Main Coop. My least favourite job of digging out the big coops also needs doing in the spring which will provide excellent compost and help raise the soil on the plot. So keep your eyes out for exciting updates in 2024!

Although we haven’t been hugely successful with our crops this year (due in part to life getting busy!), there is always a new opportunity next year. I’ve picked out some new varieties of vegetables to try to grow and I am determined that my tea plants will be in place and ready to go over the next few months!

It’s been a busy year with the animals and I’m pleased to say that Gertie is continuing to do really well despite being blind. She has her own little coop and the Topknot Gang are regular visitors although they do tend to steal her food and generally make a mess of her run. Gertie doesn’t seem to mind and clearly enjoys the company!

All in all, 2023 has been a busy year, full of adventures and we are looking forward to another exciting year on the plot in 2024!

We wish you all the best for the coming year!
