Storm Incoming…

With the next storm rolling in, I went down to the allotment this afternoon to check on the chickens and to make sure everything was tied down ready for the very high winds which were coming. Maude and Mavis were tucked away in their nest box avoiding the wind and rain. As I checked over their coop, I discovered that the nest box had shifted and the fencing had come out of its grove. After several minutes of wrestling with it, I got it all back into place.

Over in the main coop, a roof panel had buckled and had a slight tear in it. It’s incredibly frustrating as the roof hasn’t yet done two full winters yet. Here’s hoping it survives tonight and the next day! Over in the New Coop, all was well. The girls were a bit skittish but it’s not surprising considering the weather.

Just as I was heading home, I checked the greenhouse. It’s always a worry in high wind especially the front door which seems to take delight in throwing itself off it’s runners and smashing all the glass. As I turned the corner, I saw broken glass on the path. Instinctively, I knew it was from the greenhouse door. Sure enough, the top panel had been blown out. Very carefully, I collected all the broken pieces and put them into the glass bin.

For good measure, knowing the wind would only get worse, I shifted the blue waterbutt and wedged it against the door in an effort to stop the door’s suicidal tendencies. I headed off home to hide away from the worst of the weather, dreading what damage I would find in the morning…
