Northern Lights over Crewe

Just as we were turning in late last night, I remembered that the geomagnetic storm, the biggest since 2005, would mean that the northern lights should be visible across the UK! I leapt out of bed, grabbed my phone and I dashed downstairs much to the bemusement of my long suffering husband.

Outside in the garden, I looked up at the sky. Above the terraces, dancing in the sky were strands of what looked like yarn flowing and floating. There was an occasional hint of pink/red but the majority of the lights were pale cream or white until viewed through a camera! You could see the lights slowly moving across the sky, rolling and rippling.

We stood outside for half an hour enjoying the view. I’ve travelled widely and despite repeated attempts to see the northern lights in Iceland and northern Sweden, I’ve never seen them. So it was very surreal finding myself standing in the back garden at home, watching a sight I have wanted to see all my life.
