Two birds, One Day

Yesterday my husband popped down to the allotment to check on the chickens. Ginny had been very quiet the last couple of days and we were worried about her. Unfortunately, he found that she had passed away overnight. Ginny was always on the shy side, preferring the company of Bonny over the rest of the flock. It was always heartwarming to come into the coop when the birds were roosting to find Bonny and Ginny cuddled up together on the perch. Ginny was always at the bottom of the pecking order, I think it was because she was a gentle introverted bird compared to the brash extrovert Mavis, who incidentally, rules the coop with an aged iron beak!

Back at home, we sorted out the Topknot Gang and Quail Mansions. To our horror, we found Quinta had also passed away. Quinta was from the same hatch as Zilla and has always been the most friendly. She always ran to the front of the coop to be the first at the food. Quinta took great delight in hopping into the food bowl and lobbing the food everywhere, much to my frustration. I think she did it on purpose, just to prove a point.

Down a chicken and a quail in one day ended our weekend on a sad note…
