Yet more sad news today from our flock – we popped out to top up the Topknot gang’s food and water this evening to find Trixie had passed away. We rarely manage to just lose one chicken – often it’s two or three in a short space of time and I have no idea why.

We got Trixie in April 2021 to keep Roxy company. Roxy was dumped with two warrens in a cardboard box outside the allotment during COVID lockdown. We’d never had bantams before and she didn’t cope with integrating with the bigger girls. So I went on the hunt for a little friend for her, finding a lovely local breeder who had a single silver birchen bantam. Sassy with a bossy attitude, she was always in charge, no matter which birds she was living with. Trixie had a particularly soft spot for sunbathing on the lawn, often splayed out in such a way, I worried she had died. The joke was always on me as whenever I approached, very concerned, she would open a sleepy eye and glare at me for disturbing her.

Trixie also hatched Gordon and his sisters. If she’d been any bigger, she would have rivalled Emily (our chicken with PTSD) in broody anger and attitude. She was a fantastic mum and all of the chicks thrived under her care.

She also was incredibly smart – often pretending to limp to gain extra cuddles or treats, despite there being no injury whatsoever! Nimbus and Stratus will miss her and the garden now will see less sassy clucking and I’ll miss my little feathery black shadow as I walk around the garden.
