The skies were blue, the air crisp and there wasn't a rain cloud in sight when I arrived on site this morning. Lots of people were down, making the most of the dry spell before the inevitable rain forecast for the entirety of the rest of the week. I said hello to Geoff and Andy... Continue Reading →
Between the Showers
This morning I walked down to the allotment armed with two large pet carriers. Geoff had asked if I could help move his girls from Andy's back into his large coop. I piled up the carriers next to the coop door and went to say hello to Steve and Geoff. We all talked about the... Continue Reading →
A Break in the Rain
The weather has really not been what it should be for May. Almost no rain in April saw the allotment emulating the driest parts of the Sahara. The seemingly endless days of drizzle in May has provided enough water to make the weeds grow in abundance. Such are the difficulties when growing plants in the... Continue Reading →
Introducing Foxy
This afternoon, I received a very exciting offer from a local chicken breeder - he had a year old porcelain millie fleur pullet he was looking to re-home. Unfortunately, someone else who had promised to take her kept letting him down with a myriad of excuses. When he discovered the coop hadn't arrived he refused... Continue Reading →
Playing with Chickens in the Garden
Occasionally, in between the rain and frantically busy days at work, I let the silkies roam the garden. It's so lovely to see them explore and enjoy time outside the coop. They continue to get more friendly and will now eat happily from a food bowl right next to me. They never stray far from... Continue Reading →
A Quiet Evening
This evening, I walked down to the allotment to check on the chickens. Happily, everyone was busy enjoying the brief respite from the relentless rain of the past week. Roxy and Trixy greeted me with loud shouts and continued to holler at me until I had thrown in enough weeds to satisfy them. It took... Continue Reading →
An Evening Walk
I ambled down to the allotment this evening to see how Snap and Sadie were getting on with the others. When I arrived Lilja and Leia were confidently walking around the run with Sadie and Snap hiding behind the perches. Rolling my eyes, I watched as Lilja and Leia took themselves to bed. Leia however,... Continue Reading →
Tiptoeing through the ‘Tatoes
An early start this morning saw me down the allotment and sorting out Roxy and Trixy wondering how on earth the nest box would be moved. To be honest, this is the panicked thought that has haunted me over the past few weeks. Will appeared around the shed door and said he and Cliff were... Continue Reading →
Collecting Freebies
This morning the weather was so lovely, I got down to the allotment early. I had found a couple of people who were selling breeze blocks and whilst I waited to see whether I could collect them later, I got busy with the blocks we already had. After a brief chat with Cliff and consulting... Continue Reading →
Coop Building and Greenhouse Cleaning
This morning I walked down early to let Roxy and Trixy out of the nest box. I am hoping that tomorrow the screws for the fox-proof skirt will arrive along with a few other oddments for the Omlet. But until it arrives, I will be popping down at night and in the morning to close... Continue Reading →
New Coop!
This afternoon we jumped into the car and drove across to Macclesfield to collect our new Omlet Eglu Classic coop and run. It was rather an impulse buy but it was such a bargain that I couldn't let it pass. The lady selling said it needed a few repairs which are simple enough to do.... Continue Reading →
Nimbus Update
Opening up the nest box this morning, we discovered Nimbus cuddled up with Cirrus and Stratus breathing normally and back to her usual self. as the best box door opened, Nimbus was the first one out and ran the length of the coop to get to the food bowl. There's no sign of strange breathing... Continue Reading →
Musical chickens continued
After a sleepless night, I had a plan. Well, I hoped it would work. Distressed clucks greeted me when I opened the backdoor. Poor Cirrus was getting some serious grief from Roxy. As I opened the run door, Roxy ran up to me and I grabbed her. The relief was visible on the silkies faces!... Continue Reading →
Chickens, chickens everywhere!
After spending this morning working, I dashed down to the allotment to feed the chickens. My plan was to just pop down quickly. As it turned out, I spent a manic four hours running around the site trying to complete several jobs simultaneously! The British weather has decided to try to emulate the Mediterranean climate.... Miracles at Home
Over the past week, the Silkie chicks have been living in the coop on our lawn. The first morning, I had to lift out each chick and put her in the run because they wouldn't go outside themselves. Once out, they huddled together and seemed far too terrified of the outdoors to move a few... Continue Reading →
Clocks go Back
Suddenly the days are much shorter, the nights longer and the temperature drops. The clocks went back yesterday and the change in daylight is really noticeable. I ambled down to the allotment at lunchtime to feed the chickens. As I arrived at the gate, I saw Cliff busy fixing his trailer. Apparently it had come... Continue Reading →
