I'm writing this after collapsing at home. Fed up of waiting for others to volunteer to sort out the pond on the Community Garden (over a year and still waiting!), I decided that I had had enough of our hall being cluttered with the pond liner. I messaged Nikki to see if she would be... Continue Reading →
It Never Rains But it Pours
Spotting the rain this morning, I delayed going down in a fruitless effort to stay dry. As I was chatting to Phil, the heavens opened and we sprinted to our respective sheds to shelter from the pouring rain. After several minutes, it didn't seem to be stopping or even lessening. Resigning myself to getting utterly... Continue Reading →
General Hard Work, Major Weeding and Captain Exhaustion
This week has marked the first week of freedom from work - and was obviously spent down the allotment (when the rain eventually let off). I have managed to completely weed 2/3 of the top plot, clearing away masses of weeds the like of which you have never seen before! Fortunately, the plants hidden underneath... Continue Reading →
Calming the grumbling
I popped down the allotment briefly on Thursday to check on the chickens to hear that someone on site had been complaining about the state of our plots. Granted they are hardly weed free but you would assume that there would be understanding about the hours that my husband and I work compared to the... Continue Reading →
Four funerals and a potato
Sad news from the allotment this week. Emily's chicks were due to hatch on Thursday and I rushed back from work to find she had left the nest and the eggs were cold. We lost 4 beautiful chicks, who appeared to be healthy and only a few hours from being born. Our disappointment was compounded... Continue Reading →
Momentous week
I am writing this in the middle of a momentous week at the allotment. On Saturday morning, at the crack of dawn, I went down to start the major digging works that my other half hadn't managed to finish. I planned to dig over at least the top plot and sort out the birds. I... Continue Reading →
Manure, Mulch and Moving!
Today was another momentous day at the allotment! First I went to feed the chickens and check they were all present and correct. Those that have been moulting have their new feathers, all except Maggie, and their feet look much better now they aren't caked in mud. Four eggs today so we are getting back... Continue Reading →
Mulch and catching Thumper!
We arrived down the allotment this morning hoping that our delivery of manure had arrived. It hadn't. But a whole trailer of mulched leaves had been dumped on the car park, free for them as wants. We borrowed two wheelbarrows and started to cart it back to our plot and deposit it in the coop.... Continue Reading →
Construction commences!
Pottered down to the allotment this morning and after sorting out the chickens (4 eggs today!), we found a trailer load of manure had appeared on site. Wasting no time, we grabbed 8 bags and spread it over the old plot - hopefully the worms will help spread it through the soil. It was fantastic... Continue Reading →
Great works at the allotment
Today I dragged my husband down to the allotment to do some digging. The new plot desperately needs to be dug, partly to get rid of the weeds and partly to level out the ground which looks like the dark side of the moon, craters everywhere! We fed the chickens and admired the continued efforts... Continue Reading →
Plans for next spring
An unexpected half day at work left me with a glorious opportunity to spend an extra couple of hours at the allotment! With two plots we now have an extra half plot for growing crops (allowing half a plot for the extension of the chicken coop and associated greens for the chickens to eat over... Continue Reading →
